He was not involved in the Pew survey.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000l3b6mfhtpy0bl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBeans and lentils are stunningly nutritious, and very economical. Cooking grains are highly nutritious, and very economical,\u201d Katz said in an email. \u201cMore dishes featuring these, and fewer featuring costly animal foods, would allow for a decisive improvement in diet quality while lowering overall cost.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000n3b6mpy3u2anv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSo, too, of course, would drinking more plain water and less sugar-sweetened beverages,\u201d he added. \u201cThe impediment is not prices, but food label literacy.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmady6rln00123b6mff9tlmag@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"the-american-diet-is-unhealthy\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        The American diet is unhealthy<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000p3b6mva85fibw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            More than 1 million Americans die each year from diet-related diseases such as obesity, cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, while unhealthy diets and food insecurity cost the United States an estimated $1.1 trillion in health care expenditures and lost productivity annually.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000q3b6may1f53et@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Objective measures of diet quality in the US conducted by scientists show that the American diet is substandard. About one-third of Americans who cook and eat at home rated their diets as extremely or very healthy. However, only 12% of those who ate out more often considered their diet satisfactory.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmady6rlo00133b6mvobilk6o@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-americans-make-food-choices\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        How Americans make food choices<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000u3b6mz7ueqbuw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Taste is the most important factor in choosing food, with 83% of adults listing taste as extremely or very important, according to the survey. Less than 50% of respondents said the same about the healthiness of food, however.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000v3b6m9sddjxps@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhether we\u2019re looking at race, ethnicity, gender, income, taste is way up there at the top,\u201d Yam said. \u201cAfter taste, Americans care most about cost, the healthiness of the food and then convenience.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000w3b6mzbs1g38a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Low cost, convenience and taste are hallmarks of ultraprocessed foods. Food manufacturers entice consumers with combinations of sugar, salt, fat and additives designed to meet a \u201cbliss point\u201d of tastiness. In the United States, some 71% of the food supply may be ultraprocessed, a 2019 study estimated.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000x3b6mir309vzc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ultraprocessed foods contain ingredients \u201cnever or rarely used in kitchens, or classes of additives whose function is to make the final product palatable or more appealing,\u201d according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmady6r2s000y3b6m6i57n5dd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Numerous studies find higher amounts of ultraprocessed food raise the risk of obesity and the development of chronic conditions including cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and depression.
